Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information (internal links may not  work) :

*************

Porthallow (Cornish: Porthalow)[1] is a small fishing village on the east coast of the The Lizard peninsula just south of the Helford River, in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It sits between the two neighbouring villages of St Keverne and Roskorwell. It has one road running through it and a post office. It is also on the South West Coast Path.[2] It has a pub, the Five Pilchards, named such for Cornwall’s fishing fleet of five pilchards used to come out of Porthallow.

The stony beach on Porthallow, that reaches out to a sandy one in low tide, is privately owned but can be accessed by anyone, villager or tourist. Manacles Reef, a dangerously rocky area that sinks many oncoming ships, lays just a mile off shore along with all its victims still there. It has a new village hall built in 2010 for the benefit of the villagers. It is as eco-friendly as possible with solar panels and floor heating from ground-floor beach heat. Many different local programmes take place such as yoga, Pilates, and monthly film showings. The wall facing the bay is made entirely of glass. Porthallow lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.

Porthallow, meaning “port at the end of the moor”, and its history have been forever intertwined with the pilchard industry,[3] as it was once a flourishing fishing village in the thirteenth century. It was first used as a fishing base by Beaulieu Abbey. A narrow beach and headlands flanking a large valley made for adequate room for settlement. The Trelowarren estate that had previously owned the village leased it to The Porthallow Pilchard Curing Company from 1914 to 1937. It was then bought by the Porthallow Institute and Reading Room. In 1971, Trustees from the village bought and ran the beach. The Porthallow Village Association became a charity in 2008 and is now still maintained by a voluntary group of Trustees from the village.
