Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information (internal links may not  work) :

*************

Lochinvar (or Lan Var) is a loch in Dalry Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, that is now a reservoir. [2]

It is located in the Galloway Hills, around eight miles from St. John's Town of Dalry. For map see : [3] [4]

The name Lochinvar is Scots Gaelic, Loch an barr, and means ""Loch on the hilltop"". Consequently it is stressed on the last syllable (unlike Lochinver).

The place gave the name to a number of aristocratic titles including the Baron of Lochinvar, the Laird of Lochinvar, and most notably to ""young Lochinvar"" in Walter Scott's epic poem Marmion.

Sir Robert Gordon, 1st Baronet (c.1565 - 1628) [5] On 12 July 1626 he was appointed a member of the Council of war for Scotland and a Commissioner for the Middle Shires, residing at Greenlaw, Crossmichael Parish, Kirkcudbrightshire.

His 2nd son, Robert Gordon of Gelston joined with his father in (THE PLANTATION OF AMERICA) in the grant of the barony of Galloway in Nova Scotia in 1621.

Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar was one of the first to embark in the scheme for the establishment of colonies in America, having on 8 November 1621 obtained a charter of what was called the barony of Galloway in Nova Scotia, and in 1625 he published a tract on the subject. ""Encouragements for such as shall have intention to bee Vndertakers in the new plantation...By mee Lochinvar...Edinburgh, 1625"" [6] [7]

On 1 July 1629, 70 Scots under the leadership of James Stewart, 4th Lord Ochiltree of Killeith, landed at Baleine, Cape Breton Island, probably encouraged by Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar.

In 1698 John Gordon was heir to his father, Alexander, Viscount Kenmore, to the barony of Crossmichael and to the mains of Greenlaw and other lands. He was son of the viscount by his 3rd wife. (Acta Parl. iv. 573-4. 675; Inquisit. Speciales. 170 210 233 [8]
