A wise, funny, and ultimately heartbreaking story about a young woman's coming of age and search for identity in rural Tennessee during the 1950s and 1960s, Kinflicks takes readers into the heart and mind of an intense heroine who joins the ranks of Holden Caulfield, Jane Eyre, and Stephen Daedalus. I very much enjoyed following Ginny Babcock through her family history as well as her quest in finding her place in life. With an almost brutal honesty the told events can provoke head-shaking or thrilling tension. At some points I had to laugh out loud. It definitively wasn't boring at all. Although written in 1975 the theme is in my opinion still relevant today. Ginny is trying to fulfill one of the socially predetermined roles of society (and being a lesbian is just an extreme one of them) but she always fails to submit to it in total due to her inner voice, her own inner moral code that makes her the individual that she is. To live that is not easy for anybody but even harder for women.
