Original 1894 5 1/8 inch x 7 7/8 inch Chromolithograph titled LEOPARD SEAL.
The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx), also referred to as the sea leopard, is the second largest species of seal in the Antarctic. It has a distinctively long and muscular body shape, when compared to other seals. This species of seal is known for its massive head and jaws that allow it to be one of the top predators in its environment.
Engraved by Pierre Jacques Smit (1813 - 1903). A natural history illustrator of the Victorian era in England.
This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.
The page size is 10 inch x 6 5/8 inch
The chromolithograph is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
