"The Old Cider Mill" is a poem written by James Arthur Lodge published in book form. The edition that I read was the first published in 1906 by the J. E. Barnes Company of Chicago, Illinois. The book is heavily illustrated with photographs taken by A. H. (Adelbert Henry) Reading. A. H. Reading was a resident of Valparaiso, Porter County, Indiana, where he owned and operated a photography studio for approximately 40 years. Most, if not all, of the photographic illustrations in "The Old Cider Mill" were likely taken in or near Valparaiso. For instance, the first photograph in the book is believed to be the shoreline of Sager's Lake in Valparaiso, with the edge of Crosby's Mill visible to the far right in this particular photograph. The poem reads rather quickly, but is an excellent example of the nostalgic and reflective poems that were being published at the turn of the century.
