This book presents evidence that it was discontented city intellectuals in the 1890s who romanticised the bushman and his notions of mateship and egalitarianism, challenges this legend and argues a new interpretation: that a guilt-stricken, culturally bashful upper middle class promoted the mateship myth and failed to install its own values.
