Original 1894 8 inch x 5 1/8 inch engraving titled HAUNT OF THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT.
The African elephant is the largest animal walking the Earth. Their herds wander through 37 countries in Africa. They are easily recognized by their trunk that is used for communication and handling objects. And their large ears allow them to radiate excess heat. Upper incisor teeth develop into tusks in African elephants and grow throughout their lifetime.
Engraved by Josiah Wood Whymper (1813 - 1903). An English wood-engraver, book illustrator and watercolourist.
This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.
The page size is 10 inch x 6 5/8 inch
The engraving is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
