Säljarens Beskrivning

Original 1887 7 inch x 10 inch etching titled FROM THE FIELD OF SEDGEMOOR

The Battle of Sedgemoor was fought on 6 July 1685[1] and took place at Westonzoyland near Bridgwater in Somerset, England. It was the final battle of the Monmouth Rebellion and followed a series of skirmishes around south-west England between the rebel forces of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, and the Royal Army of James II. Victory went to the Government and about 500 prisoners fell into their hands. Monmouth escaped from the battlefield but was later captured, taken to London and executed. Many of Monmouth's supporters were tried during the Bloody Assizes. Many were transported abroad, while others were executed by drawing and quartering.

Etched by Charles Oliver Murray (1835 – 1921). Landscape, figure and architectural etcher, both original and reproductive, illustrator and painter. Exhibited his work at the summer exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts and many of his prints were declared to the Printsellers' Association, London.

After John Seymour Lucas (1849 - 1923). John Seymour Lucas was first and foremost a historical genre painter with a particular talent for realism in the depiction of costumes and interiors. Inspired by van Dyck and particularly Diego Velázquez, he excelled in depicting scenes from the British 16th- to 18th-century Tudor and Stuart periods, including in particular the Spanish Armada, the English Civil War, and the Jacobite rebellions.

Published in the Art Journal by J.S. Virtue & Co. Ltd., London.

Page size 12 7/8 inch x 9 3/8 inch

The etching, on fairly thick paper, is in good to very good condition with some foxing in the white border. Reverse side blank.
