Original 1894 5 1/8 inch x 7 3/4 inch Chromolithograph titled DORCAS GAZELLE.
Dorcas gazelles, also known as ariel gazelles, are one of the best-adapted of all desert species. If water is available, they will drink it, but they can actually go without water for their entire lives, getting all the moisture they need from the food they eat. Their diet consists of flowers, seed pods, leaves and bark, preferably from acacia trees, as well as the stems and tubers of lillies..
Engraved by Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865 - 1926). A German painter, author and illustrator, who specialized in animal images.
This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.
