Major Dick Hern was one of the most successful racehorse trainers of all time, champion four times, 16 British classic wins including three Derby winners (Troy, Henbit and Nashwan) and the great Brigadier Gerard who has been described as the best British horse of the 20th Century. The Major's colourful life is recalled through his time as a brilliant horseman to the horrific fall in 1984 that left him partially paralysed to the termination of his lease at the Queen's stables in West Ilsey.
