DC Comics Presents (Vol 1) #42

Publisher: DC Comics

Cover Date:
February 1982

Writer: Paul Levitz; Mike W. Barr
Title: The Spectre Of War / Whatever Happened To The Sandman?
Plot: After dispelling a radiation cloud from a nuclear testing site, Superman returns to the Daily Planet and changes into his civilian identity of Clark Kent. He asks Perry White if he could write an editorial piece concerning the causes of war. As the two men speak, a soldier enters the city room and hands Clark an envelope. The soldier disappears and Clark reads the letter. It is addressed to Superman and it warns him about a sabotaged missile set to detonate at a military base. Superman uses his super-hearing to locate the missile and succeeds in hurling it into outer space where it explodes harmlessly. As Clark Kent, he visits the Pentagon to try and get some answers. The soldiers on the base apprehend him and are prepared to keep him detained. The same mysterious soldier that gave Clark the letter appears at the Pentagon and orders the other officers to let him go. Clark tries to speak with the soldier, but once again he quickly disappears. Clark changes back into Superman and flies to the Justice League satellite. With the help of the Red Tornado, he determines that the mysterious officer that he had encountered might have been the legendary Unknown Soldier. He uses the Justice League's computer system to learn about a military base in the North Pole that might be responsible for the inexplicable missile launches. He flies there, but the commanding officer, Major Amos, activates a device called the Microtronic Beamer, which initiates the launch sequences for all of Earth's nuclear missiles. Superman flies at the speed of light and succeeds in defusing all of the affected missiles, but for one. With the final missile, he burrows it deep into the ground where it explodes. Superman absorbs the bulk of the blast. Returning to the rogue military base, he finds NATO officers have apprehended Major Amos and his men. The commanding officer tells Superman that they were contacted by some 'soldier' who marched all of the men outside at gunpoint. Afterwards, Superman visits the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. ----------- Whatever Happened to the Sandman? A woman named Miss Baxter invites Wesley Dodds into her home. As Dodds enters the parlor, he finds the room is filled with men who now hold him at gunpoint. One of them is 'Snooze' Simpson, a gangster who knows that Wes Dodds was once the adventurer known as the Sandman. He wants revenge against Dodds for arresting him in the past. Wes has no idea what 'Snooze' is talking about. Miss Baxter reveals that she discovered Dodd's dual identity some time ago when her father, Wes' psychiatrist, gave him a formula that made him forget his identity. Wes wanted to forget his career as the Sandman because he could no longer bear the guilt of accidentally transforming his former partner Sandy into the Silicoid Monster. The gangsters trap Dodds inside an over-sized hourglass. One of them mentions Sandy's name, which serves as a trigger that restores Dodds' memories. He punches his way free, dons his Sandman garb and apprehends the thugs. Afterwards, he pledges to find out what became of his old partner.

Grade:
FN+ (Fine Plus) Mid grade comic. Several signs of wear and age apparent at first glance. May include slight spine wear or minor creases, but still retains good eye appeal.

This item has a UK distribution stamp on the cover.
About Distribution Stamps:
Before comics began dual cover price distribution in the UK around 1982 many US comics were sold in Britain with over stamped cover prices. This took the form of a rubber stamp with the UK price being stamped somewhere on the cover. This was done to enable the newsagents to know what to sell them for usually they took the form of a small round stamp with the UK price within, sometimes alongside the letters T&P (Thorpe & Porter). As these stamps are part of the original distribution process they are not considered detrimental to the comics grade, in the same way that penciled arrival dates are ignored on US distributed comics for grading purposes.

Multi-Buy Discounts….
Most of our listings offer Multi-Buy discounts. Usually starting at 3 or more items to gain the discount. The items can be ANY combination of ANY ITEMS included in the Muli-Buy. They DO NOT have to be multiple copies of the same item. Just pick the required total quantity and you’ll automatically be given the discount on all of them!

Best Offers......

Mint Comics?
We do not list ANY comics as Mint condition. In our view this grade does not exist. Comic books are mass produced paper items, handled many times often with little care before even reaching the shop or newsstand to be offered for sale. EVERY COMIC even a brand new one will have some form of minor defect if you get out a magnifying glass and look closely enough.
If you are intent on finding comic book perfection, or CGC guaranteed results, it would probably be best to view the comics in person at our store before bidding!

Grading Information
It is an unfortunate truth that the established back issue grading system is misleading to new comers. Both ‘Good’ & ‘Fair’ are low grades. For this reason we have provided the chart below. If you are unsure what to expect from grades like VFN+ and G-, just refer to the chart. All you need to remember is that 100% is brand new while 5% has been through the washing machine. Everything else comes in steps between.

The best way to use this chart is to think of it as top middle and bottom. This enables even a layman to visualise the condition of the comic.

Top – High grade collectable items
Near Mint (NM) = 100% As new. High grade comic.
Near Mint Minus (NM-) 90% Almost perfect. High grade comic.
Very Fine Plus (VFN+) = 80% Almost perfect. High grade comic appearing Near mint at first glance but with one or two minor flaws upon closer inspection.

Fine Plus (FN+) = 65% Mid grade comic. Several signs of wear and age apparent at first glance. May include slight spine wear or minor creases, but still retains good eye appeal.
