Portrait at the right is of Máximo Gómez y Báez he  was born in 1836 in what is now the Dominican Republic.

At the time, the Spanish part of the island that would become the Dominican Republic and  was occupied by Franco-Haitian forces.

At the age of 16, Gómez joined the Dominican army to fight against the Haitian occupation when Santo Domingo (the name of the island) joined Spain as a colony, he enlisted in the Spanish army. Gómez fought against the revolutionaries who wanted to regain their independence from Spain, but after the revolutionaries won their independence, he left for Cuba.

Seeing that Cuba was suffering from the oppression of the Spanish army, he joined the Cuban revolutionaries. Thanks to his experience and knowledge of Spanish tactics and strategies, he was quickly promoted to major general by President Céspedes.

He is famous for having led the first "Carga al Machete" (machete attack), depicted on the obverse.

Following disagreements between the leaders of the Cuban forces, Gómez decided to leave his command.

After the war, he held posts in Jamaica and Panama.

Gómez then went to Costa Rica, where he met Antonio Maceo, joined Martí's cause and signed the Montecristi Manifesto in 1895. At the end of the Cuban War of Independence, in 1898, he retired to a villa outside Havana.

In 1899, he was removed from his position as general-in-chief of the Cuban army and refused to be appointed president in 1901. Gomez died in 1905 in Havana.

           Che Guevara, during the early years of Castro’s dictatorship in Cuba, served as the President of the National Bank of Cuba.

• As part of his role, he signed the banknotes issued by the bank.

          This 5-peso note represents a piece of Cuban history during a time of significant political and social change.
