Postcard 1: An officer on a Travelling Post Office amends the town names on the fillets of a sorting frame in preparation for the next sorting of mails.
Postcard 2: 'The Line' of mailbags within the Travelling Post Office sorting vans. These hessian sacks were filled with sorted mail, tied, tagged and dropped off at stations along the TPO route. They have beome icons of the postal service.
Postcard 3: Trackside apparatus looms over the rails, waiting for the Travelling Post Office to snatch the mail pouch from its arms. The pouch was caught in a net suspended 3 feet out from the side of the train and contained semi-sorted mail collected from local post boxes.
Postcard 4: With a blast of a whistle another Travelling Post Office snakes its way out of the station. These trains travelled in relative anonymity until 1986 when a striking red livery was introduced in time for the filming of The Midnight Hours, a documentary updating the classic Night Mail made some 50 years earlier.
