The first Russian translation was published in St. Petersburg in 1792 under the title Caliph Vatek without the author Beckford William Thomas (1760-1844), an English novelist, art historian, plantator, and politician. He was once considered Englands richest commoner. He is best known for writing the 1786 Gothic novel Vatek, building Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire and Beckford Towers in Bath, and his extensive art collection.
