A Surgeon's World is a biographical account of Dr. William Nolen's personal surgical practice after his residency at Bellview Hospital in NYC. It is a remarkable book - one that I've read and reread over the years. The account of his practice is a realistic look of what a skilled surgeon faces when practicing the trade. The emotional highs and lows, desperate situations that bring both joy and sadness, the need to always be available to help others (he was the only surgeon in a group of medical men) and the day-to-day routine of surgical practice in a smaller community kept him very busy. Dr. Nolen loved his practice and his patients. There are several newer books that look at the practice of surgery in the 21st century but all surgeons - and physicians - have as their same goal the best medical care that they can give.
