Säljarens Beskrivning
Original circa 1914 12 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch Etching titled A HOPELESS DAWN.
The title of this painting comes from a passage by John Ruskin, which affirms that Christ is at the helm of every boat. The kneeling woman, comforted by her mother-in-law, realises that her husband is lost at sea, but the open Bible, altar-like table and print on the wall hint at the consolations of religion.
Signed and dated (1888) in the plate.
Etched by James Dobie (1849 - c.1911). Etcher of landscapes and genre born in Edinburgh, worked near London, exhibited etchings at the Royal Academy from 1885 to 1911.
After Frank Bramley (1857 - 1915). An English post-impressionist genre painter of the Newlyn School.
From “Modern Etching and Engraving: With Examples by Leading Artists” by Basil Hansard published as part works by Virtue & Co., 7 City Garden Row, City Road, London circa 1914
Image size 9 7/8 inch x 7 3/8 inch
The etching, on thick wove paper, is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
