The three sections of the book contain materials, including rare and first published, about Russian, Lithuanian and Cossack chronicles, letters and documents, memoirs about Kyiv and Kyiv eyewitnesses, contemporaries, and foreign writers. The collection of materials is published by the Provisional Commission for the Review of Ancient Acts under the Kyiv, Podolsk, and Volyn General Governor, which was chaired by Mikhail Vladimirovich Yuzefovich (1802-1889), Assistant Trustee of the Kyiv Training District, a fighter for the Russian cause in Ukraine against Polish separatists and Ukrainian autocrats.
