Melodic Death Metal has famously had it roots in sweden, pioneered by bands like At The Gates, Dark Tranquility and In Flames. However this genre hasn't been soley confined to the shores of Scandinavia with the UK spawning one of the most important death metal bands in Carcass. Fans of "Heartwork" era Carcass would do no wrong in checking out EchoVirus. Their debut album Invictus bears all the hallmarks of quality melodic death metal whilst retaining a sound that sets them apart from many of the scandinavian groups. This is acheived in no small part by frontman Dan Kennedy's throat shredding vocals (bearing a strong likeness to Jeff Walker). With strong riffs and hooks throughout the album along with some dazzling leads provided by Dimitri Savathrakis and Andy Slade. The rhythm section is tight and punchy thanks to drummer Rich Owen and bassist Graham Smith. If I was to find fault it isn't with the band themselves. Production could have been slightly better (the bass solo in Prelude... could have been a little higher in the mix) but considering the album was completely self financed by the band it still sounds fantastic. Stand out tracks for me have to be Prelude To Dystopia with its melodic middle section, New Gods and live favorite Collateral. In closing I am a huge metal fan but lately I have found myself looking outside the genre as I was finding nothing new to get excited about. Thankfully EchoVirus came along. One of the best metal albums I've heard in ages.
