"Letters Patent to Alexander Melville Clark of 53, Chancery Lane in the county of Middlesex, Patent Agent, for an Invention of Improvements in Safety Apparatus for Lifts or Elevators. A Communication from abroad by Solon Pattee, General Accountant, and Alphonso Budd Smith, Ship Master, both of San Francisco, in the County of San Francisco, and State of California, United States of America."
"This Invention relates to a new means of locking a nut to its bolt so that it cannot be jarred loose or thrown entirely off the bolt. On fish plates of railroad rails, on vehicles of all kinds, and also on machinery, great inconvenience is at present experience owing to the lossening and even loss of nuts caused by the motion of vehicles..."
