The legend began in 1968 when the parts manager at Detroit’s Stan Long Pontiac ordered a new 1968 Firebird to use for drag racing. It was ordered with the automatic column shift Hydra-Matic and the heavy duty 3.90 gear option. After a brief racing stint the car sat in storage until 1970, and that is when the car took on a whole new life. The plan was to build the baddest 1968 Firebird of the day and that is exactly what happened. The engine of choice was a balanced and blueprinted 455 assembled with the hottest parts available. The car quickly gained a reputation in the Detroit street racing community as an unbeatable machine. In fact, the Blackbird gained so much notoriety that it was featured in the March 1971 issue of Popular Hot Rodding magazine. After changing hands and powerplants a few times the car sat until 1997 when new owner, Eric Schiffer, took possesion. Eric freshened up the Blackbird but kept the car true to it’s roots.
