Ken Gillam Artist

About the artist

Ken Gillam with a Trompe Loeil Painting Born in Hampshire, after completing my education, in which art did not feature a great deal, I entered the banking profession. During this time I became an accomplished dinghy sailor even winning both the National and Inland Championships, experiences that would later stand me in good stead for one of my favourite artistic subjects, the sea. After some time in banking, I then worked in the charitable sector, and finally education.

Following my "retirement" from competitive sailing, I devoted myself to learning to paint. Self taught, and unencumbered by the strictures of a formal art education, I'm driven by my love of the sea, which is reflected in my acclaimed maritime work. I also love the beautiful English countryside which inspires my landscapes. I also undertake commissions and have tackled subjects from steam trains to pets. This has resulted in excess of two hundred paintings and commissions already being sold both throughout the world.Winning the Championships

I've participated in a number of group exhibitions with a couple of one man shows. Having given up full time employment to pursue my art, I work mostly in watercolour, and also in acrylic. I tend to favour maritime and coastal scenes, but also produce landscapes, or whatever the client wants. Watercolour is a challenging medium, but when it all comes together, can produce a seascape in which you can almost taste the salt spray. Some of the guests at Exhibition Preview

Artist's Statement

I like to convey the majesty of the sea and sail in my marine paintings, and try to capture the beauty of nature and a sense of the open air in my landscapes. I do not yet feel that I have achieved the ultimate in representing these two subjects, but that is part of the challenge that keeps me striving as an artist. As I endeavour to portray that magic something that transports the viewer into another place, perhaps evoking memories of days gone by, I hope my work inspires and uplifts you, if it achieves that then I am well pleased.

I have also painted very small miniatures 2.5"x 3.5", ACEO's ( Art Cards Editions & Originals) which were a new venture for me, these are becoming highly prized amongst collectors of this type of art, which are an extremely affordable way of building your own art collection. At an exhibition in Chacago half of my miniatures immediately sold.
