Thread: re: question about netbooks

    Some more info.
    Which Microsoft Office?

If you're switching between a desktop and portable computer, it's easier if you're running the same software on both beasties, or at least similar versions of the same software. This is why most people would prefer to run Microsoft Office (in some form) on all their machines.
Over time, Microsoft Office has become more and more complex on the assumption that computers are becoming faster with more memory. Netbooks reverse that assumption somewhat, but that doesn't mean MS Office won't work on a netbook.
For most documents and Office applications, a netbook has enough CPU 'grunt' to handle your needs, especially if you've taken our advice and maximized the RAM memory on the netbook.
Microsoft Office can work on small netbook screens. Office 2003 has a minimum recommended screen size of 800x600 which is fine for a netbook. Office 2007's system requirements state a minimum 1024x768 screen size which is a bit higher than most netbooks.
All that does NOT mean that you have to use Office 2003 on netbooks - in fact Office 2007's ribbon interface has some features which make it ideal for netbooks.

I've got one of the original Asus EEE 4Gs, a little tiny netbook with a 4GB solid state memory. I wouldn't be without it, and at a pinch it substituted for my dead desktop, but I couldn't use it all the time for everything, because it's simply too small to use comfortably for lengthy periods. (I know this, I wrote several university assignments on it).

It has Open Office on it, and is perfectly able to cope with writing documents and doing spreadsheets, the storage capacity can be expanded via SDHC memory cards up to 32GB a time and as many flash drives as you require, it's fast, nippy and is great, as long as you remember it only has a 5.7" screen and kb to match. LOL. No CD or DVD drive, but as yet, I haven't needed one in over a year, not missed it at all.

I also haven't missed Windows. What's with the Microsoft fixation?

A netbook is a wonderful little machine if portability is high on your requirements list, and you're not planning on spending long hours using it.

Thanks, guys, it has given me a lot to think about.

My first base unit was a Patriot from PC World in 1999, tiny little thing, but I discovered too late that because it was so small, I couldn't upgrade it or add much to it. I didn't want to buy a netbook and find I had the same problem. But then I didn't want to carry a big laptop around with me either.

Have you thought about a decent machine for home and a cheap and basic machine for the shop? That plus a removable or USB drive that you can transport back and forth with the data on.
