Well - I can say thanks to the techies for "temporarily" restoring my listings so that I can export them and remove the word KNIFE from the title.

It at least means that I don't get to re-enter all the listings by hand. At least there is a reasonableness in that respect here that doesn't exist elsewhere.

I personally find this reaction ludicrous, but then - my kids don't feel threatened when they go to school and don't feel the need to carry blades to make them feel safer.

So - where - and how - does one sell (legitimately - AND - legally) pieces of wood that artists can use to build collectable items of beauty?

There doesn't even seem to be a section for camping anymore - 'Hiking and Camping' has been replaced by 'Hiking'

This is a real shame. is eBid getting to the point where those who like to cut their own steak outdoors are no longer able to trade on the site?

And here I am - having brought about 200 new members to the site already - at the moment I ask myself why.

It is not ludicrous. eBid has to operate within UK law. The law currently restricts the sale of certain knives and prohibits others.

How could a seller here comply with these laws? There is no way they can prove identity and age to make the sale legal. The only way to do that is by face to face sales.

The only thing that is ludicrous is the law itself as it does nothing about the problem it is trying to address. If someone wants a knife for offensive purposes they will get hold of one despite the law or fashion one for themselves. All these knee-jerk 'Look...we're doing something' laws do is impact on the law-abiding citizen.

eBid tried to treat users as adults and to allow them to sell within the law and that was clearly abused. So anyone who has a gripe about the total ban should seek out and take it up with those responsible for its introduction.

If you were in the UK, you wouldn't be able to sell it THERE, either.

Whether or not you agree with the Law eBid have to abide by it, or risk prosecution.

As always in life, the majority of people act sensibly, but there's always some muppet, who thinks that he's cleverer than anyone else, or the rules don't apply to him, who manages to cause problems for the rest.

UK Laws on knives & firearms (including replica guns) are very strict now.
One of my nephews is studying film at college, a year or so ago he bought, quite legally at the time, a replica firearm to use in making a film.
The laws have since changed & you can no longer legally buy the one he has, he has been advised that if he wants to use it for filming again he should notify the police first, so there are no problems .

This last paragraph above is exactly what I meant by my statement.

I can see exactly where eBid is on this - especially as the real problem is the mindset of the people who use the knives, not the knives themselves. I can fully understand why eBid would rather not become embroiled in the legalities of trying to defend themselves in court.

What frustrates me is broad statements like 'rather not let the knives get in the wrong hands' (so kill a whole lot of valid businesses selling exclusively legal and valid items) when in reality - most stabbings involve a kitchen knife purloined from the *kitchen cutlery* drawer in the home.

And yes - the attention and the laws are aimed at the wrong place. The mindset is what they need to change - it is not the knife that stabs - it is the person holding the knife.

Maybe I should start selling dolls...

Thanks, eBid, for restoring the 'camping' part of 'hiking and camping'. Appreciated.
