I remember having a little tricycle like that red and white I think it was. I used to ride it around the farm yard when the first lot of cows were in the cowshed being milked. I used to ride it under the cows tapping their tummys as I went under, if I went past their noses I'd give them a gentle tap, and give their tails a gentle tug if I passed behind the.
The only response I used to get from them was a look that more or less said 'oh god - here comes that pesky kid again'.

I was given orders to keep out of Dads way - if I stayed in the cowshed where it was always warm and dry I was always hastling him for a cup of fresh milk straight out of the cow - so I had to stay outside so he could get on with the milking.

He had a milking machine for some of them, but a few of the older cows didn't like the machine so they used to be done by hand - there was no point in me doing it as I'd be drinking it as I was milking - a bit like blackberry picking - eat as you go. Or the way I used to do it - collect them in a plastic bag, make a hole in one corner, and squash them for fresh juice.
