Unfortunately, there is no facility for establishing how many 'watchers' an auction has; there is a thread on here somewhere though advocating that there should be one
We await a 'management decision' on this

Watching.... Is 99.0% useless. It may give the seller hope.. but in this Days of online auctions, tis a thing of the past for sale possibility. I never believe in false hope.

I used to sell on the other side where there was a watched item 'counter'. Personally I think its a waste of time in that the watched items didn't always sell. In truth, I'm glad there is no watchers counter here - it does give false hope to sellers.
I myself watch items - sometimes with the intention to buy, but also I use the watch item facility as a quick link back to that particular seller. It saves going into 'favorite sellers'.
I've always thought that the majority of watchers are either doing the same as me, or sellers watching an item to see if it sells and for how much because they have one the same and they are thinking of selling it, or sellers just watching the competition.
BOTH very good reasons for the 'watching' facility to be available.
I always place items in watch ( well, used to over there) then I come back to the item the next day and if I still want it, I bid! Helps stop me from making rash decisions and buying things I dont need especially when on the net late at night!
Nowadays I rarely bid and buy anything 'instantly' so I get fed up with having to search especially just to find the same item again!
Another change I would like to see is, for your search word(s) to remain in the search box after the results have appeared. I find I have to do a LOT of repeat typing here compared to Greeday.
Regardless of whether a number of watchers results in a sale, as a seller I find it 'fun' to see there are watchers on my auctions. I think that's reason enough to want the facility. I like a bit of fun in my life, you serious boring logical killjoys should lighten up a bit!
And, to be serious for a moment, over on the other side I can't recall having successful sales where there were 0 watchers and if there's 30 or more I'm pretty certain I'm going to get to see a bidding war even if most of them are just lurkers.
But as a buyer I don't bother to watch items here. Firstly, I'm under the impression that watching here doesn't work the same way it does on eb*y and I can't be bothered to learn a new way. If I think that after more than 5 years of using a new site, why would new buyers arriving here be more open to change? I believe there's a valuable lesson there in site design -- don't be too creative, copy the 400lb gorilla. Make a few changes to the decoration on the pages, but don't force users to learn a new method.
When was the last time you hired a car and said "Oh, clutch on the right, accelerator in the middle, unusual, but I'm happy to drive that"?
And the other aspect is that as a buyer I don't feel the same pressure to watch and snipe that I do on eb*y. If I bid here, chances are I'll be the only bidder. Not that I bid here often, because the searching and notification of favourite matches is simply not adequate. Here I have about 5-10 favourites marked to email me, over on eb*y I have more than 100 and much as I would love to set up the same ones here I can't do it.

If you want to watch an item, there is a 'watch this item' facility (green bar button below gallery photo on item description).
What we don't have here, what I was referring to above, and that I do not miss is the counter that tells sellers how many items have watchers and how many watchers on each item.
