The actual cause was so simple I am embarrassed to declare it.

The speaker volume remote to my 5.1 speaker system has a little balance wheel on it. I had always assumed (I have only had it 5 years) that this was stereo balance i.e. Left/Right. Looking at it closely just now I noticed it isn't marked L/R but F/R. It is actually a balance between the front and rear speakers. It had got knocked fully over to R somehow. This meant all output was going to the rear and nothing to the front. So as the flash player was not outputting anything to the rear speakers I was getting nothing.

Moved the wheel back to mid-point and everything is working again.

    Stupid computers....

If I was that clever I would have noticed before I spent all morning trying to fix unbroken code and the best part of the afternoon pulling the PC to pieces.

Off down the rescue centre tomorrow to get a cat - so I have something to kick next time.

I don't care what you say, I think you were extremely clever to persist in finding the cause and solution. I know what it's like scrutinizing coding with a 'toothpick' to find the teeny weeny culprit screwing up the works, and, oh what joy, when you finally locate and fix it!

So, when you get the cat, leave the poor thing alone ok? LOL!

Many years ago I had a similar problem when a users pc at wok lost all of the sound. I went into all the settings I could find to ensure the sound was enable and turned up and on etc. Eventually gave up and called in our tech repair guy, I explained what I had done and checked and straight away he put his hand under the bottom of the monitor and turned the out of sight volume knob up.

Talk about embarrased, but we had a good laugh over it.

I have never been able to get my speakers to work so will have to search for a button to turn on somewhere. But I don't need speakers, do I?
