Stars. Your vote please

I'm an "I don't see the point of them, don't bother looking at them, don't really see them in the general clutter" person.

Not sure where that fits in the poll, but I voted that I think they should go, because they're clearly upsetting other people.

Not that it will make any difference, because this is an off the shelf forum, and I expect that there will be significant code manipulation (with the potential ramifications, on other functionality, of fiddling with it) involved. There are other more pressing things to be dealt with first.

The trouble with this poll is that those who can post without being endlessly voted terrible don't care. I don't blame them but it is rather akin to asking cyclists whether they approve of motorways!

I think it's overly cynical to assume that people don't care about things that don't affect them directly. I'm not bothered about what happens with stars on my own threads, but I've voted "get rid" because of how it upsets others.

The other problem is that it is a trivial problem in the great scheme of ebid and it would cost money to remove them. Can't see it happening.

I think there's absolutely no chance at all of anything being done, and think there are probably more important things to worry about - but the poll and vote is really just an expression of support as I see it, and I've taken part in that spirit. Nothing will change, but perhaps those of you who are bothered by the issue will realise that you *do* have the support of those who are less in the firing line, or less bothered by being targets.

I've had my share of one-stars... I'm pretty sure I know who was doing it in my case and I find it a source of entertainment. That's not always an option for others, so I'd love to see them vanish to save folks being upset.

I voted for them to go as the majority of forum users do not see the point in having them, and its a sad day when people use them in the way that they did yesterday on jay's thread.

Whether the option to rate a thread by stars is available is maybe beyond eBid's control. As eBid's response to someone stated - the forums are a bought in, bolt on package. This may not provide the option to switch off the thread rating system. You may be better off making a case to http://www.vbulletin.com/ as eBid stated that they have no intention of replacing the forum software.

As others...I never notice the stars and wouldn't put any store in them if I did. I decide if a thread is of interest to me - not somebody else.

Sorry to be "overly cynical" but I've had a rough time on here at times when my Real Life was tough as well. It even spilled over onto another site where items were bought from my charity id JUST so negs could be left (who wastes money on revenge like that?). It wrecked a Frappr map which was supposed to be an ebid promotional tool. The two incidents involved at least two different ebidders, each malicious and support made remarks about them not breaking the rules. These remarks were not helpful. Neither of them was significantly contributing to the business side so "rules" were not important. Ebid doesn't have a parliament, judiciary or laws. It's a business website which has had some nasty people posting and they should have been removed earlier, as should the person or persons who are doing this.

Sorry, looking at my post with hindsight "overly cynical" looks a bit judgemental, it wasn't meant that way. I hope you read the rest of my post and can see which side of the fence I am firmly sitting.

Kimbo, I realise that you were not being unkind, but I've tried really hard to ignore the star thing and mostly wear it as a badge of pride and then someone brings it up again instead of ignoring it.

I and others have been harassed on here in ways that I would simply not tolerate in the Real World. I'd leave the place it was happening or call the police. Leaving ebid is drastic when it is the main place I trade and the latter is not available to us.

Dan, that's what most people who are not involved say - just consider the constant irritation of everything you post.. be it funny, serious, tragic, helpful or any other attribute, some prat rates it "terrible" and worst of all, ebid management don't think it matters!

To be honest it is annoying and I have had one of my previous plug your auction threads marked with one star.
I was angry about what happened yesterday.
But every time a thread is posted about it, we give the guilty party/parties the satisfaction of "being noticed".
Would it not be much better if everybody completely ignored the issue?
I for one never look at them; it tends to be the thread title that makes me go and have a read; not what others think of a thread.
