The most important thing is to trust the source of the signed photo if you're not getting the signature in person. I've spent thousands of pounds on obtaining signed items, and if I don't get them in person, there are only three sellers I trust to buy from.
I've seen plenty of fakes for sale in high street memorabilia shops. And I know they're fake. So bad were they, I almost reported one shop to trading standards.
I know for a fact the autograph shop in Bluewater shopping centre that Victoria Beckham sued a few years back for selling fake David Beckham signed mechandise does sell fakes because back in 1999 I bought what has since turned out to clearly be either an autopen or a secretarial Patrick Stewart.
