What a fascinating trail that picture took me along, Becky! That turns out to be a Canadian Official war artist from WWII - a google image search turned up some very striking paintings.

I will have to go back and have a look Madelaine. My mother's first husband was the war artist Jack Chalker you can find him on the net too. He did amazing paintings that he managed to hide while in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. His illustrations were used in the war diaries of Sir Weary Dunlop the famous Australian war hero. He has also published them in his own book. You just can't imagine what they must have gone through. We are a very lucky generation not having to suffer all that.

Oh, Jack Chalker is a very different kettle of fish - not an official war artist but a man who was being extraordinarily brave to even try to draw under those terrible circumstances. Yes, we are a blessed generation!
My mother used to get annoyed when people said that young people are more mature than her generation. "The lads in my class at school had to grow up rather quickly as they flew Spitfires!"

It's extrodinary to think my own father went off to fight at the age of 19. He was in Naples when it got bombed and ended up in Austria running a prison camp that held SS officers at the end of the war. My father- in- law had a very lucky escape when he was told to get out of a boat not far from Arnham which had been overloaded and told to get in the next one. The original boat got blown up and nobody survived.
I look at my own 19 year old son now and just think we owe so much to that generation.

Right chaps, look lively! You've got a new C.O. and a new set of goals will be coming shortly.
After taking the numbers this morning I went off to survey the various fronts in my new toy, sorry, latest piece of military hardware.I'll give you a detailed report tomorrow once all the numbers have been crunched.
On the whole, it's looking quite good. There haven't been any updates for a couple of days but I'm glad to see this hasn't been taken as an excuse to slide. UK numbers are up 21,713 to 892,418 and the US site has 926,808. eCrater have only managed a paltry increase of 74 items in the last 24hrs and Bidville have dropped below them after losing 22,189 listings.
I want to see the millionth listing on each site PDQ!

That's quite alright, Private. I'm still getting used to the promotion myself.
I hope you make it back to base camp okay as I'm sending you some more troops.Since some of our UK members have discovered it's really easy to send things abroad and doesn't mess up the old tax return, there should be some extra listings appearing on your side of the pond.

Right WAKEY WAKEY troops! It may be a wet dismal Monday morning but there's work to be done! Out of your beds, 20 push ups, and get that tin mug of tea down your throat. The new Captain expects great things from us so let's not disappoint! Looking forward to the new goals ma'am.
