I definately like your idea, then if someone seaches for an item in the usual category, they'll be able to tell which are charity auctions and which aren't.

Birthdays are good for you - statistics show that those who have the most live the longest.

So most people like the idea? OK.. G&M.. how about it? I know it is more work than more cats under charity, but it would be a real help and possibly improve sales as the charity items would be more visible to browsers
Madelaine
4 shops for Cats Protection & Prospect Hospice
My Postcard Shop
BK Stamps for Philatelic listings
& Yarnalong for craft patterns
and
Lotzabitz -anything that doesn't belong in one of the other shops.
Just a quick bump for anyone who hasn't seen this thread....or any new fundraisers out there.
Would anyone else like a specific category to list their charity items in??
As far as I can see, all we have at the mo (that will be used) is:
Hospices: St. Cuthbert's, Durham
Other
YDC

I didn't think this was a done deal and the popular idea was to have generic listings and not named charities...
and/or
a marker to identfy which items were for charity.
I think this needs a lot more discussion.
We had a major discussion about the YDC and we decided that could be for charities and charitable causes. Not all charities are registered ( or required to be) and at the moment the charities commission isn't taking any registration applications for charities who have less than an annual turnover of £? ( can't remember the figure offhand) for the foreseeable future.
So I would like the category title to be amended to reflect this..
Ye, totally agree about a visible marker for charity auctions.
I asked about definition for the Charity Category, mainly to avoid "other" being overloaded.
I agree about named charities not being in the top level (cos there's way too many), but why not the sub categories? It would be on a par with Health & Beauty: Fragrances: Chanel
I'm not sure what you mean about the registered & non registered titles though......can u explain it a bit more.....am a bit brain dead today
It'll be admins decision eventually, whatever's in the best interests of the site....so all we can do is bat ideas around.

It is a little complicated...but in brief...
If you are a charitable, non profit making group...that is all proceeds go to the running costs of the group and no member gets any payment, other than expenses, for their work...then you can. if you want, be registered with the charity commission and be classed as a charity in the UK, However, unless you have a certain level of annual turnover you are not required to register with them. Registering with the CC can help you to get funding from grant makers etc.as they often will only give to groups who are registered. This is because the charity commission rules are very stringent.
If you have over a certain amount of annual income/turnover, then you ARE required to register, and as these levels are currently being changed, the CC are dealing with those larger charities, and the smaller previously exempt, charities, before accepting any other smaller one who want to voluntarily register.
So not all 'charities' have charitable status. but are charitable causes.
This is from the Charities Commission Website:
Generally, only charities with an annual income above £5,000 must now register with the Commission. This threshold has gone up from its previous level of £1,000. The registration requirements for ‘exempt’ and ‘excepted’ charities will also change. Charities that were ‘excepted’, and some that were ‘exempt’ from registration before the Charities Act 2006 was passed, will have to register if their gross annual income exceeds £100,000.
When the programme of registering all currently excepted and exempt charities has been completed the law will allow charities with income below the thresholds to approach us requesting voluntary registration. In the meantime it is not our policy to register charities that do not already have the required level of income.

I'm fairly well up to date on CC rules & regs, i'm registered with them a couple of times as a trustee.
Do you mean the the whole category should be "Charitable Auctions" instead of "Auctions for Charity", thereby including those with charitable aims, but not status?
I'm not bothered what it's called.....just know we can do better than feebay
It's interesting that out of 576 hospices in England & Wales, only 3 of their trading arms are registered on the dark side!
Think i'll just re ask Gazza my original category request & find out one way or another where to list the hospice auctions.
New Year, new start & lots of money to raise

You can't register on Feebay unless you are a registered charity. I pointed out that the smaller charitable organisations can't register, and its often those that find raising money hardest...their reply was that if we don't fit their criteria then basically 'tough'...
even though the CC has indicated changes they don't see why they have to.
I guess lots of charitable groups can't find their way onto Feebays list.
It would be nice to have somewhere that supports the smaller groups...
