My youngest and her mate went to the park in the summer holidays - they are 12, had their mobiles, it was daylight, loads of families in the park etc. A bunch of about ten lads came, and in front of the families, kicked the crap out of the girls. Well, my daughter's mate is only the size of an 8 year old to start with. It took three weeks for the police to take a statement off them (by which time all the cuts and bruises had faded), another three weeks for them to take a video statement off my youngest (by this time her mate had moved out of the area - lucky her). So now the kids who beat my daughter up have their parents threatening me, the lads are threatening my daughter in school and no one does a thing. My youngest told the police it was all videoed as a happy slapping by one of the lads, but the police have never asked him to hand in his phone so they can use it as evidence, so the lads are happily passing it around to all their other mates, kids at school etc. Of course the lads are denying it all, and some of the parents are screaming about they will get solicitors to clear their kids names etc. It would save most of that if the police would just get off their backside and get hold of that video from the phone it originated with. So what happens instead? My daughter is having to try to make a deal with the lad who took the original video (it is still on his phone) to tell him she won't press charges if he gives her the video. Which she has told me she hopes she gets the video because then the police and families will know exactly who was involved.
What gets me so annoyed is the parents who don't give a sh*t and think their kids are total angels in this, the police who don't give a toss about stopping these kids (this time they were 5:1 on a set of girls, next time it could be an 8yr old, it might not be physical abuse it could be rape etc), and especially the fact that families in the park stood by, watched this assault happen, did nothing but look the other way and the police can't be bothered to ask for witnesses to come forward. I mean, am I meant to do that job myself? And why couldn't these families at the park step in instead of ignoring it all? Next time it could be their kids. I've stuck my neck out in these situations before, not something I want to do, but my conscience won't let me stand by - obviously some of these other people in the park have no conscience.
