Default High street store lost out on a few sales

Ok not my fault my daughter knows alot about electrical items. Read on and this was not meant to have happened this way, My daughter was advising me & it backfired on Comet.

Ok in Comet looking at their 37" LCD HD TV'd found one I thought was ok but wanst too sure. SO who do I get to advise me, my daughter, never ask a salesman hes there to get you to buy.

ME: So which one do you think I should get
DAUGH: What as in LCD Tv's
    ME: Yea
DAUGH: None theyre no good at the moment
    ME: What ya mean
D: Well look at the picture closely and then walk back and look again
(So I did and what did I see I hadnt seen before, as the picture (footie) was moving fast the pics were blurred, as I went further back the bur made my eyes hurt.
    Walked back to D.
    ME: Whats doing that then
D:Well theyre not showing you a HD channel
(by now some peeps had wandered over looking at the TVs. And a salesman wasnt far away from us persuading potential customers)
    ME: What !
D: Well the picture or channel theyre tuned into is normal TV that is the pic you get when you go and look at the TV you have now.
ME: Oh how do you know this
D: Well look at the top of that mans head there are double lines like Ghosts
    ME: Yea
D: Well that doesnt happen on HD Tv. So this is a normal analogue channel.
ME: So if I brought this HDTV took it home the pic would be no diff to the one we have.
D: Thats right, Unless.................you have HD satellite cable etc, where the picture would look even better.
(Im studying the tv & notice some people earwigging & the peeps with the salesman watching us and salesman fondling his pen nervously
    ME: Now thats deceptive
D: Yes theyre not going to tell you that, you only find that out when you get home.
(Someone has now got hold of the instore sky remote & searching through the HD channel section.

    Ok here goes.

ME: Wow look at that pic now.
D: Yes but it wont be like that when you get it home coz ur not paying for HD channels.
ME: Yea but wouldnt the dvds look better when played
D: Yes they would but they would have to be the new HD ones, if you played the old style dvds(ie: ones we all have now) you will not get a better pic it will be like watching normal tv.
ME: Damn thats a rip off, so if I got HD tv, films on my multi region dvd will look rubbish unless It was all hd. I would have to buy all new hd dvds
    D: correct.
(Now people have heard enough the ones with the salesman walk off complaining, my daughter looks around see's a small crowd & peeps.
D: Why is everyone so close to us
ME: Theyre listening to what you said about the HDTV and how it wont show what we expect it to show.

What does she do, she goes all quiet, shy, blushes and says "Mum why didnt you tell me they were all listening"
ME: Because you were advising peeps about the cons & pros of the tv and they needed to know.

    How rotten am I

    Nice one lol
I always talk to the salesperson first, along the lines of............
"Watch my lips, I do NOT want any extra insurance Thankyou very much!!"
& they tend to get the message pmsl

rofl. Strangely enough, your conversation seemed to confirm everything I had thought about HDTV.

Gonna have trouble getting us to switch to HD until 'normal stuff' is trasmitted in HD then, and when that happens will our old sets get a picture even through a freeview box. Is this the industry's way to get us all to splash a load of dosh on new gear.

Well look at the size of the new Playstation 3. Its massive, but logically they can make it 80% smaller as the ps1 is small but chunky, ps2 is slim and half the size of the new ps3. Thing is you cant play ps1 games. But you can play ps2 & ps3. Apparently, its all a ploy to get you to splash out money & then about 6 - 9 months later they bring out another version but smaller.
Look at this xbox 360. Everyone raved about it, but you cant play the xbox games on it unless you have a disc and can go online & download the software to enable it to play xbox (original) games. The xbox 360 is a live machine, failed to mention that youd need to pay subscription to use the games. And there are very few xbox 360 games out there that you can use without going live. If you do have the 360 beaware that you can only play xbox live ones if you pay subscription to go online. Check the game top right corner, usually hidden by the price sticker . I refuse to pay £45 per yr for the subscription to go and play live games online. Dammit man. RIP OFF

I think a lot of people got caught out with the PS3, thinking they could put their little ol' PS1 games in there to play. Same with the kids' Nintendo DSs I bought them preowned Xmas before last - they play the DS games, and the Gameboy Advance games, but not the original Gameboy games. No way would anyone sane want to pay £30+ for the DS version of Tetris if the old Gameboy version could have run on the DS.

Exactly Madcat, thats how they rip us off. I mean we still play the original Commodore consoles here coz we like the games. It seems that the dealers & makers TELL us what we do, look at records now no longer made went to cd's. I love playing my records. Tapes in cars now its cds. Then they made the minidisc. To replace cds but this didnt take off, so I have a minidisc player a few minidiscs pre recorded & home made ones & you cant even buy the damn prerecorded ones anymore. Its a flippin rip off.

I remember when VHS came out not long after that followed Betamax, they said Betamax would take over did it heck as like and all those peeps who chose Betamax instead of VHS poor souls.

Agreed - I definitely remember my first video being a Betamax. But I'm not that old, honest <<cough, cough>> And who can forget Homer Simpson's car with its 8-track player?

Only in the summer did my mother change from a black and white tv to a colour one - she would have stayed with b&w longer if only she could have found another b&w tv to buy. I daren't mention the digital switchover to her, she would have a pigging cardiac.

I've still got my Betamax player. I still reckon it was the better system.
I still have the Spectrum 128. and the ZX81 or whatever it was called. The tapes are a bit knackered now, but some of the games were good. My husband didn't like games... apart from a helicopter & tank scrolling shoot em up. Silkworm? Oh and what was that TV cartoon? Through the trapdoor? I still have the compendium games tape issued for Live Aid. My Commodore wore out after 3 generations of us played with it.
Michael has all the older Games machines , and all the handheld ones to date.
I got a brand new PS1 with 2 controllers and a Spyro Game for £16 from Currys. The game cost more than that. I was surprised how much smaller the new one was. They were on sale on Espit a week later for £30! I also got a Game Cube for £24. They appeared on Espit for £50.
I told Michael if he wanted the new machines he could buy them himself. He decided he didn't want them. He thinks they are too expensive, and the games are too. He's quite happy with Halo 2 ! He thinks there are quite enough on-line games as it is, so doesn't see any point in going on line. He also learned the hard way, that downloading updates to PC games can end up with a virus wiping out everything on the PC.

I had the Spectrum 64 I think it was, then the Amstrad 464. The amount of time it took to load it from one of those damned tapes! I loved the Spectrum's Atik Atak (sp?) game, I have managed to get a PC version of it downloaded, still a great game, even if my reflexes are now rubbish. My ex had a still-working Calecovision (sp) or whatever they were - those orange box consoles that played the bat and ball game. Blimey, ought to have taken that when I left him, it might have been worth a few quid now since it was still in working order.

We had a NES system, but it broke not long ago; shame because they are becoming collectors items now - someone said if I had told them before I threw it out, they would have bought it from me for £50. Gameboy, DS, Gamecube, PS1 and PS2 were all pre-owned when we got them. I fancy a Nintendo Wii but I will probably get one preowned when the price has gone down a bit. I don't think I have any system that I bought new. We've been through about three PS1s (not the little ones, just the old clunky ones), last one I got off a bloke who advertised it in the newpaper - £20, had three controllers (good job because our old ones were knackered), it was chipped, came with about forty good games, and the steering wheel. Kept the kids quiet over the summer when it was raining and lousy weather so was worth its weight in gold. I get them the games that involve using a dance mat, or the PS2 Eye-Toy games, so at least they can get some exercise.
