Didnt your mommy ever teach you not to answer a question with a question?

I was hoping to judge from people experiences on here how often they tend to pack up so i could decide if it was worth getting another

Drive death time is dependant on many factors which include (but are not limited to) the amount of data access, internal and external temperature, level of physical movement - or did you drop it? syndrome - original manufacturer, model of drive, whether your electricity supply is nice and even or whether it spikes when your fridge kicks in, the quality of the product you're using and so on.

In other words, your drive could die within a year or it could last for a couple of decades.

So if your data is valuable, make multiple backups across different medias and store them in different physical locations.

have been maxtor external hard 320 GB hard disk for about 9 months now and no problems..

Depends on the size of backup you want.. as you could buy the cheap 8.5 GB dvd +R disk as a secondary backup in case anything goes wrong.. costs about 50p each.. so you are safe.
