    Default Tagging

Electronic tags should be used to keep tabs on the elderly, a Government minister has suggested.
Science minister Malcolm Wicks said devices normally used to track criminals could help families keep an eye on older relatives.
Mr Wicks said many families worried about elderly relatives or "what's happening about an 80 or 90-year-old who may have Alzheimer's", and using the technology could let them know their loved one was safe.
"Satellites currently monitor the planet in a variety of different ways," he said.
"I'm raising this as an issue for discussion. Are there other uses of technology that could benefit society?

"We've got an ageing population with many people frail and many suffering from dementia, including Alzheimer's."
He continued: "How can we get the balance right so that these people have the freedom to live their lives, to go out in the community and go shopping?"
Similar technology is used to "tag" and keep track of convicted criminals who have been released from prison.

My Gran had one of those emergency buttons that you pin on to your clothes, so she could press it if she was unwell or had a fall etc.

Would she wear it no, so I couldn't see how on earth you would get an electronic tag on her unless did it forcibly!

    Thumbs up

Sadly reading the general topic of this thread. My mother in a nursing home, because of suffering with Dementia.Think maybe unworkable for these type of persons,as their minds' do not oprate to enable mixing with strangers. The general public would be more frightened that actual sufferers.Hopefully in years to come, maybe a partial cure may arrive.Taking your mum is a sufferer to Ri,know the implications only to well

My Mum had dementia. The Nursing Home had those electronic keypads at the door, so she used to wait for a visitor to leave and went out with them before the door shut. She had to be removed from visitors cars quite frequently, protesting that the nice people were taking her for a ride. The mobile pensioners with all their marbles were allowed to come and go as they pleased. Mum climbed over a 6' fence to escape when she was 79. Unfortunately for her escape bid, she climbed over the wrong fence and ended up in the kitchen garden, where she spent a pleasant hour weeding. If they had tagged her, she would have found a way to disable or remove it. It was a lovely old Manor House withbeautiful gardens. I think she saw it as Colditz.
