God And I thought I was up early!! I already have a BIG RED NOSE So I don't need to put a Rednose on it! I am The man Who Benefits from all you Wonderful Fund raisers! THANKS YOU ALL You have no real Idea what a Difference it makes...... At the Moment my Autistic and Severe Learning Difficuties son needs a Soft room! Cost £4000 !!! THATS just to help him stop self harming! The treatments (I use the word loosly) And there are some that help! Cost about the same.....Look at autism as a clock and Set it at say 10 past the hour (in my sons case) And then any little treatment might move that clock on to 11 mins past. Trouble is Some treatments work for some kids and not for others. We tried AIT (Audio Intergrated Training) Cost £2500 Which Helped move him that Minute. But just Google Autism and you will see the maze of stuff you can try (all at Mega costs). I posted on an autistic site the message. Is Autism the new cancer Meaning Is money being poured down the drain. I m sure like cancer there are genuine people trying to Solve the Autism problem But for every one Genuine there must be 100 Rip offs?

The first problem with children on the Autistic Spectrum is the lack of Consultants specialising in Autism, which is why my grandson was undiagnosed for 15 years. He was 8 years old before they admitted he was dyslexic, and he got 1 hour special help per week.
The 2nd problem was the the Conservative's policy of closing the Special Schools, and going for "Inclusion" in mainstream schools. Most Autistic children are unable to cope with the noise, crowds and smells in a normal school, and need 1 to 1 teaching. Unless you are very lucky with your LEA, your child won't get this. Been there, done that, worn the T-shirt.
I deregistered Michael at age 14 years 9 months with a reading age of 8.8, spelling 7.9.
I had to prove I could provide an education according to his age and needs. A pity the LEA and the schools weren't made to prove they could do this. It took me 18 months to teach him to read. He uses a spell checker on the PC and prints out his work. He still can't spell. Probably never will be able to. He can't do sums on paper as it looks like gibberish to him. He can add up in his head by some weird method I can't fathom out, but has an accuracy rate of 98%.
I wish I had known that school is not compulsory when he was 5 years old. I would never have sent him. He learned more in the first 2 years out of school, than he did in the 9 years in the school. He's 19 now. The terrible meltdown rages are thankfully in the past. He's physically and mentally 19 years old. Emotionally he's about 14. We used to lock the doors and windows at night. We had to balance the risk of not being able to get out if fire broke out, and the risk of him sleepwalking into the deep lake at the back of the house. I think the sleepwalking was stress related because he couldn't cope at school. Once we received the official letter confirming we were providing appropriate education, and he didn't have to go back to school, he stopped sleep walking.
