Thread: Photography advice

    Talking Photography advice

Need some advice from some of you amateur and professional photographers out there please

I want to branch out in to photography both for personal and business reasons. I studied photography briefly as part of my graphic design course but as you can imagine being an immature 20 year old in a dark room meant i got little done in the way of photography anyway that was basically all traditional photography where i had to produce the photos myself. I need digital photos, but not the kind i am getting with my cheap £150ish digital camera... most are blurred, low quality photos and i cant take any up close shots.

So i will be heading along to jessops on Saturday but so that i dont sound like a complete idiot i was hoping someone could give me some advice before then! I need to be able to take good quality crystal clear shots at very high resolutions, they need to be digital files, i'd like to be able to have the option of taking panoramic views and night shots (not sure what night shots involve) i also need to take up close shots. So basically any advice on any of the above would be greatly appreciated.. i am going along to jessops but am always naturally suspicious of advice given from someone who is involved with selling the product im asking about so i am asking you kind people first

i have a good eye for things that would make a great shot. I just lack the equipment and knowledge to make those shots come out

i know there are lots of you in to photography out there so hopefully help is not too far away...thanks in advance!

    Thumbs up

    Hi Pete,

I studied for a City & Guilds 744 Photography from 1977-1980 at Westbromwich college of commerce & Technology.

I was trained as an industrial & commercial photographer.

The camera's i have used and owned over the last 30 years are Sinar P's Cost £2 Grand in 1978

    Hassleblad 500C

    Nikon's F, FE, FM.

A member of The Royal Photographic society, coming runner up as Junior Photographer of the Year for AP Amarteur Photographer.

With all my experience along came the Digital Camera and made good photographer's redundant.

    I have a Kodak DX 6490 & a Nikon Coolpix L2 & a Olympus SP 700.

These Camera's costing no more than a few Hundred quid each SHAG what i was using 30 years ago !

I gave up professional photography in 1985 because i could not earn a decent living. My middle daughter friend's parents have just had to close their 20+ Year old photographic business, Because no one wants to pay £1,000 for a wedding photographer.

I did the photographs for a friends wedding last year and was amazed that Aunt Glady's can & Will take 200 Random Photo's let her PC do special effects, then burn them onto a DVD disc, the software will even put music and put my hard work to shame..........

This the Reality of the "Business" today. Sorry to put a Downer on it.

I see local colleges do Photography courses maybe sign up pick peoples brains, Press photography may be an outlet, Parties, Hotels that host parties.

Sittings for Graduations, Weddings, Christenings vias home visits.

    Set up costs

    2 X Digital Camera's. Always 2 for emergencies.

    1 X SLR = £600

    1 X Compact Camera £250

PC Set Up with Good 20 Inch Monitor £1,500 = Mac
    Imaging Software £500

    Printer £250-300

    Flash set up with umbrella's £600 - 800

    Back grounds & Stand £1,000

I hope this helps Good Luck !

Nice one Paul..... very useful post!

Should have made it clear i didnt want to become a photographer and nothing else. My friends dad is a photographer and has found business going down the pan since now people take their own photos etc to save money. He has gone digital now. The reason i am interested is im a graphic designer, i use istock for my images mostly and although they are cheap i tend to use a LOT of them plus certain shots i need i have to commission out to a professional photographer for £25 an hour and thats a special rate for me lol

if i was better at photography it would really work well with what i already do. I have to take photos quite often but really struggle with the equipment i have, i could upgrade it but am thinking about getting a really good camera and maybe studying photography part time because it ties in so well with what i do. I all the photography for my final project in college... did all the corporate stuff and promotional materials for an extreme sports store... took some great shots of a friend of mine while he did skateboarding tricks.... other fab shots of him sitting on his board with a wall with graffiti on in the background. I knew the pics i wanted for the post etc and went out and got the exact ones i wanted. That's basically what i need to be able to do, i lack the skills and equipment at the moment as i mentioned before.

Will check out the cameras you mentioned though so thanks
