New football boots can lead to life-threatening blood poisoning in children, experts warn today.
Doctors in Birmingham report on two unusual cases of toxic shock syndrome seen in a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy who developed blisters on their heels from wearing new boots in football matches. The blisters became septic and contained the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Both children were admitted to hospital with symptoms including fever, rash, abnormally low blood pressure, vomiting and diarrhoea.
