    Googled and found this:

Usenet is a distributed Internet discussion system that evolved from a general purpose UUCP network of the same name. It was conceived by Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. Users read and post email-like messages (called "articles") to a number of distributed newsgroups, categories that resemble bulletin board systems in most respects. The medium is distributed among a large number of servers, which store and forward messages to one another. Individual users download and post messages to a single server, usually operated by their ISP or university, and the servers exchange the messages between each other.

Google Groups is an example. http://groups.google.co.uk/group/tea...lnk=hppg&hl=en There are literally thousands of Newsgroups. Each one is dedicated to a particuar topic - much like the forums here are - and users leave messages in much the same manner. The biggest difference is that with Newsgroups users can login to one of thousands of different computers, all over the world, which carry copies of all the messages within each newsgroup. These computers are constantly exchanging messages with other computers within the network. When a user writes a message on one of them, it can usually be seen anywhere within the network within a few hours (at worst). Some companies charge for accessing the various newsgroups and offer a range of services.
