Thread: ICE scam????

  1. #1

    Default ICE scam????

I sent the ICE info to almost everyone in my email contacts folder as I thought it was a good idea.....

I have just received an email from someone who I sent it to (a contact via Ebay) she has apparently reported me to ebay as it is a scam !!! I replied saying that I didn't understand why she had forwarded the ebay report email to me... and got this reply:-

    "Latest Mobile Phone Scam

I have just received information from Stephens & Scown Solicitors that there is a new mobile phone scam concerning Pay as You Go (PAYG) Mobiles.

The scam is that you are asked to set up an “In Case of Emergency (ICE) Account” on your PAYG mobile.

Apparently this is a modular system that searches for the word ICE text and then changes your phones setting and takes any PAYG credit left on your phone.

Please ensure that this information is circulated to all staff and please pass on to family and friends"

I can't see how that works personally, is this just trying to put the frighteners on people or what???

    fgs

I am tempted to reply saying stop being so stooopid, but ya never know, I have been wrong (on very very rare occasions)
    Anyone know more about this??

I think that the scam email is more likely a hoax - Have you seen this published by the ambulance service? http://www.eastanglianambulance.com/...wsID=646104183

I'm not a techie but I can't see how a name in my mobile phone address list can mean someone can take all the credit from my phone. If this was the case, surely someone would have done it using more common words like "mum" "dad" "home" "work" rather than relying on people creating a new entry - doesn't add up really does it?

I think it is a load of moody myself..... sounds like a sick hoax by those trying to complicate matters in cases of emergencies where your ICE numbers would need to be accessed.

I have emailed the lady back with the link to East Anglia Ambulance Service. WHat annoys me is that she has forwarded the email from EBay thanking her for reporting it to EVERYONE, even those that I emailed (thought I did a BC rather than CC on the email though.... )

Send her the second link I gave above and see what she says. Somehow I doubt you'll get an apology.

You might also like to send the link to Feepay as well.

Perhaps it was selective Mel - you sent me a copy of the email but I've not received one from the other lady and/or eBay.

I've googled and the Solicitors mentioned are a real practice in Cornwall - I wonder if they know their name is being used for the hoax?

I have sent that link to her Damian, with the suggestion that she emails everyone she has contacted tonight with the CORRECT info - she did say thankyou
