thanks for the advice. I am putting on a few items a day, mainly because it is time consuming and i get pretty bored if i put too many on! (photo part is the worst). For most items i put on at a price i would like plus a bit extra so i can reduce a bit but there are a few that i just put on as low as i am prepared to go. Next step for them is the car boot.

A garage sale is impractical for me because i live out in the country up a long windy farm track! Luckily i do like car booting so that even though the prices are rock bottom i get enjoyment out of it. Once i get the clothes on i will start looking at trying to sell other stuff there. I am hoping that things will improve online when the car boots finish for the season. Ours was packed sunday before last (cancelled last sunday due to weather).

Talking to others on there i found not one person who had heard of e bid! Not that i had before before @elench mentioned on on e bay forum.

    Good morning Goldenwonders,

I certainly didn't take your post as being critical of anyone, all anyone can do is relate their own experiences and leave it to others to decide whether or not they might be helpful, or not. I also understand that my experience might be a 'one off', pure luck or simply down to a coincidence that my sales were on the increase, regardless of whether I was doing PYA threads and getting ads. visible on GS.

I was certainly none the wiser about how GS works even when it seemed to be working for me. I tried to work out why I seemed to be having some success, but when I sometimes had trouble getting anyone to even verify that what I was seeing, let alone trying to duplicate what I was doing to get that result I could only be described as guessing about what was going-on. Since the change in format everything everything I thought I might have found is moot in any case.

Your point that viewing numbers soar when you mention an ebid listing on FB, but doesn't result in any increase in sales is similar to my thoughts on GS exposure. My sales were increasing, but the items that were selling were never the items visible on GS. My guess was that seeing one of my ads. on GS led to a buyer viewing it on Ebid which led them to the "Sellers Other Items" button, enabling them to see other items that interested them even more. Some of which they then bought?? Or that, having also got Ebid on the Sellers filter, some buyers ticked the box and bought from the wider selection. It's all guesswork.

Then there is the fact that my sales plunged after April / May '24, well before the change to GS which happened in April this year. I hope you continue to have success on the other sites and still put flyers in your parcels. Personally I'm pessimistic about the underlying causes of this down-turn and don't see it being reversed for some time for the sort of items I sell.

come the next budget and no one will have any money to spend on anything, anywhere!!! Must admit that life really does feel depressing when you cannot even sell secondhand items on any site/area (including real life high street shops) for anything but pennies. Biggest problem is all the cheap (usually chinese) junk that keeps arriving on these shores! Having said that i did purchase a fairly cheap chinese strimmer that so far has been brilliant!!

The UK industry and manufacturing base was destroyed back in the early 80s so there is no choice but to import goods. Now of course things are getting more expensive to import from Western Countries due to import duties/tariffs so people have less to spend.

I've just read an article from The Observer on my MSN newsfeed on how the fabric of British society has been torn over the past few decades which makes depressing reading. We work the longest hours for the lowest pay and have the lowest benefits and pensions. The greatest use of food-banks with some foods being rejected because they cost too much to cook. More people living in poverty etc. etc., and how these are home grown problems when compared to the OECD members or Europe, but being put down to mass immigration because it's politically expedient.

I'm not some sort of Leftie as I also agree that mass migration is out of control, is harmful and should be stopped.

In my previous post I mentioned that my sales virtually stopped in April / May '24. I don't think it's a coincidence that just before, in March '24, I received Notice of Codings from HMRC reducing my tax codes on all income apart from my State Pension. I believe that many others received the same and with frozen Tax Allowances this is now happening every year and to more people each year. Effectively, while bills and prices rise, incomes are being squeezed with at least 20% of any increase being taken away in tax, automatically every year. So more and more people have less disposable income every year. The crunch point is coming for an ever increasing percentage of people.

The big three on-line selling sites all reported less sales last year, High Streets are imploding, the British Retail Association reports sales down everywhere with huge numbers of small / medium sized businesses in difficulties or on the verge of collapse with the increased fears for job security for their employees that brings.

Taking all that into consideration, I'm not surprised that sales of vintage glass have virtually ceased on here. Last year was my final year on obay and I sold 5 items out of the 50 I listed. Worse than the 28 I sold on here. Only my view, but with so many people now being noticeably worse off than they were a few years ago, the last thing I expect is sales on a level with a few years ago.
