Thread: Local collection only, any successes?

  1. #1

Default Local collection only, any successes?

I have several things that are not suitable for posting. I'd love to put them on ebid. For example a large plant propagator and several old inkjet printers. I can't see any way of searching for items that are within x miles of my postcode. Am I overlooking something?

If there's no way to do that, I find it hard to imagine how such items would ever get sold.

Does anyone have some good experiences selling large items, e.g. furniture, bicycles, trailers...

I believe you have to do an Advance Search and there is a section for this.

I just don't know if a newer person will spot in the search that there is an Advance Search ? ? ?

    Wow, so you can! Thanks!

Well, I've only been here 20 years, so maybe it needs someone with more experience!

This is a great site, but some of the UI is just appallingly inept. Even a beginner on oBay would likely see that option in the left pane of the search, along with many other options. If you're designing a web site, features have to be easily discoverable and evident. Even the option for 'advanced' is just a tiny link, not a button.

OK, anyone who wants a (possibly dead) inkjet printer for 99p, local collection in west Surrey (UK), PM me and I'll list! Also many other repair projects I ought to clear out instead of hoarding.

Sometimes, you just have to press buttons and see what you get.
I remember trying the bulk editor and somehow I lost 10 listings. ( My first gray hair appeared )
    Had to re-enter those listings.

Trust me, that's advice I often give to people on a desktop or laptop, it's always safe to right click on something and just see what the context menu provides (unless it's an appallingly badly designed application).

But that's not my gripe in this particular situation. Just look at this:

A tiny little 'Advanced' in between the search box and the big search button.

And compare it with the side bar of your search in ebay, which has a very evident

Size: 13.5 KB

And if you choose 'Within', you can refine the distance further.

We all love eBid, but let's not mince words here, that comparison sucks. Which is ironic, considering that there are so many aspects of ebay that suck ultra-big-time, and are not just user interface design but actually make selling there a nightmare these days.

It would be trivial to change that tiny 'advanced' link into a button, probably a couple of lines of html.

    Whatever happened to Kaizen?

It is a trivial change because it's been done before to the Forum log-in. Several people were confused whether they had to use another pass-word or their Ebid password.

Quite quickly the "log-in with Ebid password" caption was high lighted in blue.

I suggested that the "See All" next to the "Other Items From This Seller" could also be high lighted to make it stand out more to new users or when viewed on GS.......

Well, although I think it should be improved, maybe I need to be careful what I wish for. In contrast, on *bay, every week there are changes, almost always pointless and with side effects breaking other things.

I'm interested in finding a book secondhand, I put into the search here "industrial policy fasteau" (no quotes), and got no hits. Fair enough, nobody's listed it here. And I trust the search here to work reliably, I can't recall ever having any problems with it that weren't of my own making. So then I put that same search into *bay. OMG. Masses of books of Jane Austen's Letters! How could that possibly be relevant? And despite asking for the results to be ranked by lowest price+post, they were all over the place in price. Presumably what I was seeing was ranked by promotion fee. Way down the list (where many would have given up before scrolling far enough) was the book I wanted. At too high a price for me, but perhaps not for some, so that site could have lost a potential sale through the stupidity.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but as you're talking about collection here, do any of you know if cash on collection is a thing here or not? I've looked through what seem like the relevant FAQ areas and I haven't found a definitive answer yet. If it isn't allowed, no problem. I just won't offer collection.

Just tick the Other box in the payment options. Make sure you describe the other option in the Lots description.

Use the ASL on the sold item and mark it as paid when collected.
