"Dementia lightsWhen I was taking down the Christmas lights, this year, I noticed that some of the bulbs had gone out on the string around the front door. And it reminded me of a clever analogy explaining how dementia affects people in different ways.
For a person with Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia, (of which there are lots of different types), the brain acts like a string of old fairy lights.
Each bulb represents a different function of the brain; mobility, memory, perception, emotion, the senses etc.
Some lights shine brightly and are as sharp and clear as they always were, some flicker and are a bit hit and miss - working well some days then not so well on others - and some just don't work at all now.
This explains why Mum, at the start of this disease, could still drive her car and do word search puzzles but struggled with telling the time, making a sandwich and knowing the value of money.
Eventually more and more lights flicker and turn off until we are left with a string of lights where only a very few are left faintly working......yet still determined to keep on shining."
