I went into my local Santander branch and asked the cashier about this. She'd not heard anything about it and called the manager over. Her explanation was that the new security measure will only be required for suspicious or exceptional transfers.

If my usual purchase on ebid was (say) £50 and one came up for £500.

Or if my usual transactions are with local businesses and one appeared in Wales or Scotland.

Her advice was it won't be used in most transactions, only those that are "untypical" would raise the alarm and bring the extra security into play.

Whether she is right or wrong I can't say and it will still cause some problems. As a collector I will sometimes pay an "untypical" high price for a piece for my collection. What if I go on holiday or even visit friends for the weekend? Even my payment to HMRC isn't typical.

If what I was told is true, a lot will depend on how tight the parameters of "untypical" are set at.

You may also struggle if you have poor signal. Santander has yet to tell customers.

HSBC customers will be sent a code via text to a mobile. If unable to receive it, they can get it sent by email — but only if HSBC has their address. Lloyds will text the code to a mobile or send a message to a landline. Royal Bank of Scotland customers can also opt for an email. Nationwide will offer mobile and email options, as well as notifications sent to banking apps and the use of a card reader.

My Nationwide branch told me something a bit different. Only a mobile phone or their card reader would do and the card reader could only be used with a debit card not with a credit card. Halifax is prepared to use a landline.

Surely if you go on holiday you will be using your card in person and not online. As I understand it the extra security measures only apply online.

Yes, they do only apply on-line. But you can guess when a long sought after item for my collection will come up on ebid, it's Sods Law it will be when I'm using hotel Wi-Fi and nowhere near my bank. There are any number of emergency situations where a person needs to use their card and are separated from their phone and need to use their card.

There are people who do not want a mobile, why should their on-line activity be restricted. Even if this is only for "untypical" transfers when introduced, the danger is it will creep and become a requirement for most transactions.

It seems I was mis-informed at my bank. According to a usually well informed and reliable contributor to the boards on obay, this is being introduced due PSD2 - an EU directive re. Payment Services. From 14/9 it requires "most" on-line payments to have Two Step Verification.

I also emailed their "Contact Us" and told them I don't have a mobile number to add and asked what alternative options they are offering.

Best of luck with that. I asked basically the same question. The reply was not relevant.

    I wonder why?

Before sending the email I tried their preferred method of contact -- Ask The Community. No matter how I worded the question the answers were always the same and all equally irrelevant. I didn't believe that I was the first person to ask this question, you confirm that I'm not.
