Default Walkers Crisp Packet Recycling - at long last

A recycling scheme for crisp packets has been launched by Walkers after it was targeted by protests on the issue.

Walkers was the focus of a campaign where its crisp packets were posted back to the snack firm, which led to problems at Royal Mail sorting offices.

Now the company said it had put in place collection points across the UK and also offers a free courier service.

Walkers will accept any Brand of Crisp Packet / Garnier Personal Care and Beauty Packaging / Any brand of biscuit wrapper / Any brand of oral care product packaging.

Guess what, NO collection points here in Mid Wales - the nearest being over on the west coast or Shrewsbury. To make use of the free courier service, you need 400+ packets!

Doesn't look like the major supermarkets, etc. have got involved yet.

My nearest is Bath - and nothing near anywhere I go as a routine. I hope it will expand. Will save the things they will take and wait it out.

What did crisps come in before plastic? I think I remember paper bags (the old 'Smiths' brand with the blue twist of salt) but am not 100% sure if that memory is correct.

What really needs to be done is to get rid of plastic being used where there is a viable alternative. For example, if I buy a pack of pears from M&S they come on a polystyrene tray, if I buy them from Sainbury's they come on a compressed paper pulp tray.

Crisps did, indeed, come in paper - I think it was waxed? But the problem is shelf life - plastic keeps them fresher longer.

I do so agree about packaging - compressed paper will do so much of the time for trays and paper bags are often sufficient.

Another big problem is knowing what you can recycle.

A lot of plastic in packaging is not marked as to its type. This means that if it is not marked I put it in the landfill bin so as to not 'contaminate' recyclable waste with unrecyclable waste.

Information from councils on what can be processed is (at least from my council, SKDC) totally inadequate.

I did read that only type 1 and type 2 plastics can be processed in most areas. I rang our council to try and get information on which types could be processed in my area. I think I must have misdialled and got through to the monkey house at London Zoo from the totally uninformed and unhelpful person I spoke to - though, to be fair, a chimp would likely have been more informative.

Apparently black recyclable plastics cannot be processed (or, more exactly, be recognised by the processing machines as recyclable) and end up in landfill, so why is so much black plastic packaging allowed? I don't care what colour tray my ready-meal comes in if it must be plastic. I much prefer foil trays anyway.
