    Default Problems with Cell Phone

Hi, I am currently having problems with my cell phone, a HTC Desire, I am getting messages that I need to update the firmware, but when I tried to do that I was told that it was not possible to upgrade. Does that mean I have to trash the phone and buy a new one? At the moment the mozill firefox thing is inoperable until I get an update. Thanks

Does it give no reason why it cannot upgrade?

My only suggestion in the absence of more information is to ensure the phone is fully charged and unplugged from the charger before trying to apply an update.

Hi Mel, It was late/early Saturday/Sunday when it happened, I can't remember any more other than that. On the download page there are various options: Lollipop 5.0, Kitkat 4.4, Jellybean4.1, Ice cream 4.0 and Honeycomb 3.0. I just pressed a random button as I could find no info in a quick search (think it was either Lollipop or Kitkat), then as I said after the message firefox just locked up. I am wondering if one solution would be to reset to the factory default, but am not suer about how to back everything up so that I can just drop it onto the blank phone rather than install everything bit by bit.

From what I have seen since (wikipedia for HTC Desire it seems that the phone has not been updated in it's lifespan (2nd hand) as the android versionis 2.3.5 and kernel 2.65.
This is based on the fact that the updates lowest number is 3.0

I suppose it is possible that the phone hardware, particularly if it is an old phone, is not capable of supporting a newer version of Android OS. Though why the phone would offer you an upgrade it cannot take seems odd.

I only have experience of one smartphone and that runs Lollipop. On that Backup & Restore is one of the pre-installed apps. There is also the option to backup to Google's servers from Settings > Personal > Backup & Reset. The same place gives the Factory Reset option, but you will lose your data and apps if you don't have backup to restore from. These options may not be in the same place (if available at all) in earlier Android versions

You could first try a Restart which may free up the stuck Firefox app. On mine you get to that by holding down the power button until the menu pops up and then selecting Restart. This will not damage any of your data or apps.

thanks for the help, I have already tried restart, that is my first reaction when something goes wrong to reboot. I got a message saying that the firmware was outdated and that I should try the google play store for an update. I guess that I chose the wrong version as it locked up. Will try doing a factory reset at the weekend and try again with gingerbread as my first option.
