Nigel Evans Ribble Valley MP Says we should have European Money. For Flood Relief.
It sems that the EU has helped cause the floods in the first place...

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain.
a very good article , with avery good comments section, this is what happens when governments and the eu pander to hidden, secret lobbying . it took less than five years from the implication of the rivers directive [2000] for major flooding to effect the uk, in part blaming the flooding on climate change , its time the sheeple woke up to the lies we are being fed.

That pic was 3 streets away. I actually live right on the bank of the River Mersey. this is the view out of my window...
The water levels have actually been lower than usual at this bit... there are flood defences just further up the bank to the right which were built a few months ago, our bit and further down are due to be installed in the spring. We've been lucky this area hasn't flooded, it's just a bit further downstream where it's overflowing
This is a bin!
Well the local council don't look up to much. That bin looks like it has not been emptied in days?
With regard to the critical comments about the EU Directive in this thread, it might have been a good idea to check back to the EU Directive itself to see if the article was actually correct.
Having checked myself, there is specific reference in the EU Directive for there to be exclusions (derogations) from the Directive in special circumstances including flood management.
http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-conte...LEX:32000L0060
If the effects of flooding in the UK have been exacerbated this year and in previous years due to reduction in flood mitigation measures such as dredging of the waterway bottoms, this has not been the consequence of EU legislation agreed to in Brussels by the UK Prime Minister but due to insufficient action by the UK Government to manage the waterways flood risks adequately.
It defies belief that the EU would actually legislate with intent to impose measures that would result in increased flooding.
The article referred to is substantially incorrect and misleading and is another example of the victim mentality that some of the British have in respect of the EU.
it took me some time to read that pile of waffle , from what i can gather you can only take preventive action in the river its self when the emergency is known, ie if its about to flood, you can not take preventive action before the event, eg if a river is known to flood during the winter you cant dredge in the summer, the emergency has to be happening or about to happen before you can dredge, which makes the the ability to dredge near impossible , a 30 ton digger would not be able to operate in the swollen rivers we have seen, the logistics of setting up a dredge at the time would be a nightmare and near impossible to achieve,
the directive does as above allow for emergency work , but its so loaded against its near on impractical to implement and achieve, the whole point of the written article was to point out that simple maintenance before the event, and the most cost effective, is outlawed, you can not dredge a river before the event , even though the likely hood is very real a few months down the line ,, you must remember the flooding we have seen in the last ten years especially in the north west , can be directly linked to the lack of proper maintenance of the ,rivers ,
if you dont clean out your gutters they fill up with crude and overflow,if you dont clean out a drainage ditch they fill up with crude and over flow, a river is no different except the volume of crude is massive, hence the flooding,
the eu directive was a disaster waiting to happen,nd now it has.

I might be wrong here, but doesn't dredging just move the problem a bit further downstream, so that the downstream towns and cities get flooded instead of open countryside.
Maybe what we need to do is remind ourselves what "flood plain" actually means.
