Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre, aka JPS... Brilliant "French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist, biographer, literary critic... key thinker in "the philosophy of existentialism and phenomonology....leading figure in French philosophy and Marxism....influencing sociology, critical theory....and literary studies..." main interests expansive, as well as those who influenced him. Can't say that I agree with his idea that "existence precedes essence. Click link for his proposition:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exis...ecedes_essence
If speaking of people, essence could precede existence. God had told Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart ; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:4-5 NIV)
Jeremiah's true person/self, purpose, role in life had already been designed before he was conceived. The essence of Jeremiah preceded his existence on earth.
Theosophy, another school of thought linked to JPS.......so all discussions herein are philosophic in nature....and as such are open for discussions in the KT. Albert Camus, also a French existentialist, refuted JPS in support of essence preceding existence. Neither changed citizenship to American that I know of.
