Wondering about that Spar sign (with no evidence, merely suspicions...)

I used to travel the Greek islands a lot; everywhere I went I'd find small corner stores ("Supers") named "Tesco", "Asda",etc. Also in the Canaries there's a photographic store called "Jessops". People purchasing there and taking a camera back to Jessop's in the UK for warranty repair get quite an unpleasant surprise.

On the other hand as I know nobody who goes out of their way to find a "Spar" here my suspicions may well be unfounded.

Probably more to do with the Dutch roots of both the company and many white South Africans.
