    No need for smartphone necessarily...the telephone networks are not on the National Grid. They have their own dc power. Have always been able to use a landline during a power cut.

    Only problem is that many phones run off the mains - especially handsfree sets. I had to get out a spare phone and plug that in to use just the telephone power.

    Yes...I know...was referring to others who seemed to think they had to use a mobile of some sort. Perhaps I should have quoted them.

    In fact although I use dect phones I have also a second dect phone the main unit of which will switch to line power if necessary. So far unused except for a twice annual test.

    This is because I tend to forget to charge mobiles and smarts...not that it matters a lot as there are other ways of running the blasted things anyway... but Murphy's Law would doubtless prevail.
