The Government is worried. Despite its strong support for fracking, local opposition just keeps on growing.
Today David Cameron announced he's going "all out for shale", offering yet more money to councils as a sweetener to accept this dirty fossil fuel.
Tell David Cameron we won't accept fracking at any price
The Prime Minister thinks that by throwing money at cash-strapped councils, they will ignore the serious risks fracking poses. But more money won't change the risks of pollution to our drinking water, earth tremors and devastation to the local environment.
And that's why local residents, from Balcombe in West Sussex to Salford in Greater Manchester, are coming together to say no to fracking.
The pressure at a local level is working. Let's make sure Westminster hears it loud and clear. Please tell David Cameron to say no to fracking

Damian - another female who agrees with your views.

As far as everyone else is concerned. It is about time the general public in the UK wakes up to the reality. No to nuclear, no to wind farms, no to fracking, no to tidal.

First, make sure you truly understand the implications of any of those methods and secondly, if you are so against them, provide a credible alternative.

The labour government has been too much of a coward to approve new nuclear power stations, because the (uninformed) general public don't want them. Just recently a wind farm project off the North Devon coast has been cancelled, because of too much local opposition. We are one of the most tidal countries in the world, but no one wants to see dams/turbines in their beautiful rivers. Fracking now attracts a lot of opposition - mostly from badly informed people and/or people who are only prepared to view one side of the argument.

In the meanwhile those very same people are complaining about the cost of energy.

Face reality or face ever soaring energy prices and/or future blackouts.

We don't need turbines in rivers to capture tidal power. Turbines can be laid on the seabed and power generated from tides flowing in and out.
Also, don't forget wave power with floating devices which capture power from the rise and fall of waves.

I'm not badly informed and I don't complain about the cost of energy (mainly because I own the solar panels on my roof which provide me with cheap electricity and an income). If more people made use of solar power we wouldn't need fossil fuel.

This makes interesting reading for me, as I've just switched to the Co-op for our gas and electric.
They offered the best prices and also had call centres that answered the phone.
The people on the other end were speaking clearly in English, and were both helpful and polite.
I'm off now to read up about this topic and then make up my mind.
    Thanks for raising this discussion.

Yes, that's why I moved to them, because they were the cheapest. I moved with Which's Big Switch and on checking martinsmoneysavingexpert I find they're still the cheapest http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/uti...as-electricity
(for short term fix) The fact that they're an ethical provider is an added bonus

I really do feel we should be supporting companies like this one.

They came out tops in all the compare sites I looked at. And they are British

Do these panels pump the power into batteries within your home, straight back into the power grid via your meter or a combination of the two?

The reason I ask is that unless you have a battery system installed you are at just as much risk of power cuts as everyone else.
With a grid tied system the power your panels generate is not used by your house but is sent straight into the power grid and you are credited for generating it. However, you are still reliant on the grid providing power to your home for you to run everything.

If the government doesn't find a way for the UK to create our own power if the very near future, we will be stuck with an increasingly dire problem until at least 2024 when the first new nuclear power station comes online - assuming that it does.

and that's yet another reason not to support fracking (if you need another one) as Total is a French company.
